Dear Manager, Leaders and Administrators, We are constantly seeking to establish comfort. When we are in a room and the temperature is too cold, we might put on an extra layer to be more comfortable. Barbara Jordan (the first black woman from the South to serve in the U.S. congress) once said, “How do we create a harmonious society out of so many kinds of people? The key is tolerance, the one value that is indispensable in creating community.” We prefer to use the word “acceptance” instead of “tolerance.” After all, who wants to merely be tolerated? When we are more accepting of others, we create an environment that is very satisfying. The physical environment of the workplace is important. Everything from the accessories in the restroom to the pictures on the walls can affect the comfort level of an employee. Ambiance is a highly underrated aspect of the work environment. An employee who feels a sense of peace and calm when working is more likely to be effective and inspired to work harder. The internal environment is even more important than the physical environment. By internal environment, we mean programs and strategies to help employees with issues that might affect how they perform at work. Helping employees establish and maintain a good attitude is essential. This also goes back to letting them know that you care about them and that you have their well-being in mind. Recognizing other culture’s holidays is a step in the right direction and will help improve the relationship you have with your employers, employees, co-workers, family and friends.
