About Quality Schools
The Quality School program was developed by Dr. William Glasser in an attempt to help create a more need satisfying environment for teachers and students and to improve the students’ overall learning process. It’s a perfect solution to “No Child Left Behind” because in order to become a Quality School, students’ scores on standardized testing must significantly increase.
There are schools who have received “No Child Left Behind” grant monies to become a Glasser Quality School. There are currently 17 approved Glasser Quality Schools in the country, one in Australia and another in Canada, with many others currently working to meet the criterion so they can be endorsed as a Quality School.
There are many aspects of Quality Schools but I’ll highlight the main items. In a Quality School, relationships are based upon trust and respect. This includes teachers’ relationships with their students, teachers’ relationships with each other, and administrators’ relationships with both teachers and students.
All discipline problems, not individual incidents, have been eliminated. When students have the opportunity to get their needs met in the classroom, then it is no longer necessary to break the rules.
Total Learning Competency is stressed and any evaluation below competence or B-work has been eliminated. Students receive no grade for work that is not competent but are provided with as many chances as they need to bring their work up to competence level. Students understand the usefulness of what they are being taught and pure memorization has been replaced by learning things applicable to life beyond school. All students do some quality work each year that is significantly beyond competence. All such work receives an A grade or higher, such as an A+.
Students and staff are taught to use Choice Theory in their lives and in their work in school. Parents are encouraged to participate in study groups to become familiar with the concepts of Choice Theory.
Students perform better on state proficiency tests and college entrance exams. The importance of these tests is emphasized in the school.
Staff, students, parents and administrators view school as a joyful place.

Teacher Training: As a certified instructor with The William Glasser Institute since 1993, I can provide your staff and teachers with training in Choice Theory and Quality School concepts. There are many packages from which to choose starting with a simple, brief overview of three hours to a five-step, two-year certification process. Your choice would naturally depend on your needs and desired level of immersion into these concepts. I am approved by the Illinois Board of Education to provide CEUs to Illinois teachers and the Department of Professional Regulation to provide CEUs to Illinois counselors and social workers for attendance at my training.
I have already provided Choice Theory training to hundreds of teachers, administrators and school counselors. I am also in the process of assisting a large alternative education program in Pennsylvania to train all their staff in Choice Theory ideas. Parent Education: As a widow who had to raise two teenaged boys alone, I KNOW how difficult it is to be the parent you want to be during tumultuous times. I’ve been there and Choice Theory Parenting is what got me through!
I offer programs and services for parents in choice theory parenting, ranging from a free online newsletter, teleclasses, live workshops to weekend retreats for parents and their teenagers. I would be happy to provide a brief evening workshop to your students’ parents that would highlight the ideas of Choice Theory Parenting. Then, it would be up to the parents to decide what level of involvement they want with the concepts.
Children’s Workshops: I am also available to provide workshops for children to teach them the concepts of Choice Theory. Typically, however, once your teachers are trained in the concepts, they are generally enthusiastically filled with ideas of how to teach these concepts to their students and you won’t need me for this process. I can, however, come in and work with children as you desire.
