What is an e-Course?
Did you know that Anger is a chosen behavior?
By using Choice Theory you can develop the skills to manage your anger and the anger of others.
Learning how to manage anger is an important skill to have in the workplace, as well as in your personal life.
It may be difficult to imagine that anger is something you can control. You can control you own anger and you can learn to deescalate the anger of others. You may be wondering why you should learn how to manage other people’s anger. No one has a right to talk to you that way and you should have the right to hang up the phone or walk away. You do have that right but the question is what does that choice do to the angry person. Often they become even more outraged. Learning these methods will give you the ammunition you need to take the proverbial wind out of the angry person’s sails.
Consider the following questions:
Can you accept the angry person for who he or she is---a person who is simply attempting to get his or her needs met in the best way he or she knows how to at that point in time?
Can you avoid criticizing and finding fault with the angry person?
Can you avoid being judgmental?
Can you keep from trying to control the other person into doing something he or she doesn’t want to do?
Can you keep yourself removed from the conflict?
Can you believe that the angry person has the right to make decisions and choices about how he or she meets his or her needs and that the person does have within him or her the ability to make those decisions?
Can you try to see the situation from the angry person’s point of view and understand what need or needs he or she is trying to satisfy?
- If acting in a professional capacity, can you remember that your job is to place the healing of relationships as a primary concern?
If you are able to quickly answer yes to these questions, then you are in a good space to intervene with the angry person. If you are not sure about your answers or you know that your answer to at least one of the questions is negative, then your involvement may actually escalate instead of deescalate the situation. Our De-escalation Skills e-Course will help you learn how to deescalate the situation.
You don’t like having to be the one to take someone angry outbursts, especially when you aren’t the one who caused the problem and you’re not responsible for its solution. I can definitely understand this sentiment. It certainly isn’t right and definitely isn’t fair to have to clean up other people’s messes. However, when you are the one who is confronted with the angry person, wouldn’t it be nice to have a plan already in place to manage that emotion so you don’t have to get the brunt of it?
I know there are some of you reading this letter who are thinking that you have NO desire to manage your own anger. Anger can be a very useful emotion. It can help us meet our needs in a variety of ways. Why would someone want to give up effective behavior? Just because you learn ways to manage your anger, doesn’t mean you have to use them. If you find yourself in a situation where you want to stay angry, then by all means hold on to your anger. Our De-escalation Skills e-Course will only give you alternatives in case you find yourself in a situation where maybe anger isn’t appropriate or useful.
