A Message from Kim

Hi Everyone,

I apologize for the lateness of this newsletter. By the time you receive this newsletter, I will be at the beach in MacKay, Queensland, Australia. I am so looking forward to this trip. I was in Australia once before in 2001 with my children on holiday but this is an entirely different trip. I will be speaking to a group of school employees about diversity and respect, as it pertains to the relationship between Caucasians and Aborigines in the Queensland area. While I plan to share some expertise with them, I am also looking forward to learning a great deal while I am there. I’m sure I will be writing about it in future issues.

Server Problems

As some of you may already be aware, I have been experiencing some difficulties with both sending and receiving email and last month my blog was hacked into and a virus installed. This was very disturbing and while my hosting company corrected the virus situation immediately, Google is listing Coaching for Excellence as a dangerous site to visit. Please be advised that the risk has been eliminated and Google is currently undertaking a review of my site to remove the warning about our site.

As a preventative measure, I have obtained a dedicated server so I will reduce my risk to outside threats and this seems to have taken care of the email problem, as well. I will also be starting my blog again soon. I will let you know but probably by the time you have received this message, I will be blogging away. I plan to blog while I am in Australia about the experience.

Choice Theory/Reality Therapy

This month the focus of our newsletter is on Choice Theory/Reality Therapy (CT/RT). You may be thinking that CT/RT has no application outside the field of counseling or education but this couldn’t possibly be further from the truth. Choice Theory has been called the “new psychology of personal freedom.” Who couldn’t use some more of that?

I have been consulting with businesses, corporations and individuals on improving the important relationships in their lives, which is the central focus of Choice Theory. Virtually all of the companies I have consulted with recently have at their core, a basic trust issue. Choice Theory can help with this.

Choice Theory provides a way of working with other people that engenders positive communication and trust. It helps you take personal responsibility for getting your needs met instead of waiting around for others to give you what you want.

Please do yourself a favor and attend the week of training I have scheduled in Chicago from April 9-13, 2007. If you want more information, just call 708-957-6047 or email me at kim@coachingforexcellence.biz. I look forward to sharing these ideas with you and I promise, they can change your life! I KNOW they completely changed mine.

Make today the day you want it to be!
Unleash the power within you.

Top Ten Things Choice Theory can do for YOU

 by Kim Olver

Dr. William Glasser developed the concepts of Choice Theory upon the foundational work of Dr. William Power’s Control Theory. Both theories provide an explanation of human behavior—Powers focuses mostly on perception while Glasser expanded his ideas to include basic human needs and the concept of total behavior—including a person’s actions, thinking, feeling and physiology.

Choice Theory provides an explanation of human behavior. Once learned, individuals will understand how everyone is doing the best they can to get their needs met. This understanding generates an empathy for other people’s situation and a desire to assist them in making more responsible choices.

So what does this have to do with you? Here are the top ten things Choice Theory can do for you and your organization.

  • When individuals in your company learn and practice the concepts of Choice Theory, their life satisfaction with be increased, making them more pleasant and productive.
  • When your leaders in the company learn and apply the concepts of Choice Theory, greater teamwork develops and quality of your goods or services is enhanced.
  • When individuals learn and practice Choice Theory in their personal lives, they have better relationships with the significant others, their children and the other important people in their lives so there is less drama to deal with in the workplace.
  • Choice Theory is compatible with creating a spirit-driven culture in the workplace. Having an identified corporate culture helps you maintain a competitive edge by getting the right people on your “company bus” and keeping them there.
  • Choice Theory can actually provide you with a vehicle for getting the wrong people off your corporate bus. You know how you have some employees that simply aren’t the correct fit for your organization. Well, Choice Theory can provide you with a model that will help others evaluate if your environment is where they really want to work and you can rid yourself of those who truly are not contributing to the overall mission and vision of your company.
  • Having the right people in the right place at work leads to increased employee retention.
  • When you implement Choice Theory in your workplace, employees display more cooperation and less resistance. Their needs are being met at work and they understand the usefulness of what they are being asked to do.
  • Using Choice Theory at work, helps to eliminate the fear factor. There is less of an “us” versus “them” mentality and more of a “we” atmosphere. Once fear is reduced, people will speak up and problems truly can be viewed as opportunities for change and growth.
  • Using Choice Theory requires people to evaluate the quality of their own work, increasing personal ownership for the value of the goods or services produced.
  • And finally, teaching choice theory to employees will attract the people you want to your business. Not only will the “right” employees show up but you will attract the customers you want, as well. Outside vendors will want some of what you have.

Don’t wait. Get started today. Choice Theory workshops and personal and/or group coaching will make the difference in your company, giving you the competitive edge you want.

Quote of the Week

I'd rather do something and fail than do nothing and succeed!

Do you know most people ignore their unhappiness? They think it will go away. They believe things will get better if they just hang in there long enough. Sometimes, some people use alcohol or other drugs to numb the pain. Well, I don’t believe that things miraculously get better on their own. I believe you have to DO SOMETHING to get a different outcome. If you keep doing what you’ve always done you are going to get what you’ve always got. If you are experiencing a mild degree of dissatisfaction, you can probably live with that. But why would you want to? Things can be better. Let me show you a better, an easier way. Think about taking the workshop in Choice Theory. You won’t regret it.

Book Review

Good to Great
by Jim Collins

I’m surprised I enjoyed this book as much as I did. When I started to read it, I didn’t realize how research-based it was. However, that is its strength. It’s not just based on practice and experience. A control-group research study was conducted to determine what it takes for a company to go from good to great.

Several characteristic were identified. A great company is lead by a Level 5 leader. This is someone with great talent, skills and abilities but who lacks the ego and the need for the limelight. They just quietly get the job done.

Then these leaders focus on getting the right people in the right positions first and then they decide what needs to happen. They confront the reality of the situation but never lost hope that they will be triumphant in the end.

They have a fully developed “hedgehog concept.” The company has defined the area that they can be the best at; the thing that makes them the most money and that they are most passionate about. Where those areas intersect is where they single-mindedly focus their efforts.

They establish a culture of extreme discipline. They allow their workers freedom within their jobs but along with the freedom comes a very strict level of responsibility. The hedgehog concept is strictly adhered to.

Finally, there is the flywheel analogy. The Level 5 leader turns the flywheel consistently until it gains momentum and starts to spin virtually effortlessly.

I would recommend this book for anyone in business or anyone who consults with businesses on leadership. It contained a lot of cutting edge information that is flies in the face of commonsense.

Tip of the Month

Effective Meetings are often a rarity in schools and businesses. Meetings are called, everyone is expected to be there and then nothing gets accomplished. There are some clear guidelines for running effective meetings. I’ll simply provide a few of them here. First of all, the person calling the meeting needs to send out a clear agenda to the parties expected to attend. In addition to topic agenda, time guidelines needs to be given and closely adhered to. If the topic requires further conversation, then follow up later with the key players involved. Don’t allow non-agenda items to take precedence over what is on the agenda unless there was time allotted to additional areas of concern. Only invite those people whose input is necessary to the topic at hand. Do not call a meeting that has topics that only pertain to one or two people in the meeting. For that, have a special session with just the people involved. Meetings should be called when you want to discuss topics with whom several people are involved and everyone needs to stay abreast of what other people are doing. Do not waste your worker's time or yours by calling meetings without clear topic and time guidelines.

Business Q&A

Question: I am a middle management supervisor and am attempting to implement the lead management principles I learned in your training. I am having difficulty though because the management of my company is definitely boss management. How do I stay true to lead management when I am being managed by boss managers?---Name withheld by request

Answer:  Excellent question! This is truly a challenge but definitely NOT impossible. In any given situation, there are at least three choices summed up simply as you could: 1) leave it, 2) change it, or 3) accept it. Now, lets look at what each of those options might look like in your situation.

  1. If you leave it, this may mean that you find another job or you relinquish the idea of implementing lead management principles in your organization. Develop the “If you can’t beat them, join them” mentality.
  2. If you change it, this would look like you are attempting to get management to understand the value of lead management. You might attempt to get them to attend a seminar, read a book or hear your own presentation about why lead management is so effective.
  3. Finally, the last choice is accept it. Accepting it is where you get to when you decide you do not want to leave it and you have been unsuccessful at changing it. When you accept it, you would realize that management is invested in doing things the way they always have been doing it. They are probably not going to see things your way and make massive policy changes. Now, you are left with the question, “Whose behavior can you control?” The obvious answer: only your own. This being the case, the most important question to ask yourself is what kind of manager do you want to be? If you are truly committed to being a lead manager then, you would continue to behave in the way of a leader rather than an autocratic boss regardless of the way you are being treated.

The name of this eZine is “Inside Out” for a reason. The motivation for your behavior should be coming from the inside out. What is in you that is dictating the way you want to behave and treat people? Once you have identified that, you know your target. Next, you establish the course needed to get to your target and you don’t allow anything to deviate you from that course.

I know this is not an easy path to walk, however, it is often those situations that challenge us the most that help us to grow into that person we truly want to be. If it were easy, what would be the point anyway?
