A Message from Kim

Hello Everyone,

On this historic day in our nation's history, I couldn't sent out a newsletter without addressing the election. However, I am thinking of the election from a position of diversity. The book I wrote with Sylvester Baugh called, Leveraging Diversity at Work, talks about how important it is to open your minds to ideas that may be different from your own. Come at differences of opinion with a sense of curiosity, not condemnation. Know that you don't have to agree with a person to be able to understand where he or she is coming from. This month's article is about the election and its tie to diversity.

One of the biggest problems I see in this country, our companies and our communities, are people who believe they have no prejudice. It is not possible to grow up in this country without prejudice. I'm not saying you are prejudiced against black people or white people. You might prejudiced toward overweight people, the homeless, people on welfare, unwed mothers, drug addicts, alcoholics, people in the military, homosexuals, people in relationships with others 20 or more years their junior. You get the idea? There is something, somewhere, that pushes your hot buttons.

What is that? Why is it there? We have learned to separate ourselves from others who are different from us so we can point and say, "That's not me." While having that sense of separation can help us feel better about ourselves, it does nothing to help us value diversity. Everyone has something of value to bring to the table. If we are unwilling to search for the biases in ourselves that we may have no conscious awareness of, then we will not be able to bridge the gap we have placed between ourselves and others.

Let's open ourselves up to closer examination. Be patient with yourself. Be kind. Don't judge yourself. Just look for your biases and get them out in the open where you can consciously decide whether or not they serve you and the people around you. You will be better for it.

Make today the day you want it to be!
Unleash the power within you.

Election Day 2008: A Time for Diversity
by Kim Olver

Since I am an advocate for diversity and equality everywhere, the USA presidential election had huge implications for our country and the rest of the world. I love this country today. Today, the United States has a different energy. People are energized. There is hope in the air.

The hope is for a healing, a unity to develop in this country that hasn’t existed up until this point. President-elect Obama didn’t get voted into office solely by the black vote in this country. It took many Whites, Latinos and others to cast enough of the popular vote to influence the electoral vote. And it was that working together for the common good that caused this historic day to occur.

Obama is right when he says he didn’t do it alone. It took all of us, collectively, to get a man in office whose platform is unity and equality and basic human rights for all. Today I am proud of the American people.

I come from a largely Republican family and Republican part of the country. That influence on my development cannot be ignored. I can see value to the Republican platform. However, when it comes to the issues that have special importance and significance to me, this year it was Obama who addressed my concerns.

My brother, a very conservative Republican, called me Tuesday, encouraging me to stay home and not vote. He knew I planned to vote for Obama, just as I knew he cast he ballot for McCain. When he knew he couldn’t talk me out of voting, he attempted to convince me that my liberal way of thinking was wrong. I needed to “wake up” and see things from the “right” position.

This is what I am talking about when I talk about issues of diversity. I wholly support my brother’s right to vote for McCain. If McCain is the candidate who represents his important issues, then he would be foolish to vote for anyone else. I respect his right to cast his ballot. I want him to vote. And, I want to listen to his concerns and attempt to understand where he is coming from in his thinking.

I know he is intelligent. I know he is passionate about the issues. And I love him. I want to see things from his point of view. As a person advocating diversity appreciation, this is what’s needed. In the workforce, we need to listen to those who are different from us and attempt to see things from where they come from, recognizing they have had different life experiences, exposure to different things and different cultural values.

While I don’t think it’s possible to totally understand where another is coming from because you aren’t him or her, you can do your best to understand things from his or her point of view. This doesn’t mean you have to agree. You can still understand why he or she is of the opinion he or she has and maintain your own position.

It doesn’t mean one of you is right and one is wrong. It simply means you see the situation differently. That is the beauty of this country. Everyone has a voice. Everyone has the right to their opinion. Every citizen over the age of 21 has the right to cast their vote for the candidate of his or her choice.

The voice of the American people in 2008 has been heard. I hope we can unite in this choice and help move our nation and its people forward. I hope that we can put petty differences aside and work together for the greater good. This is my sincere hope for our country, our companies and our communities. Are you willing to do your part?

Quote of the Week

"If you want to be listened to, you should put in time listening."

--Marge Piercy

This quote simply reiterates what I've been saying throughout this newsletter. It's actually Stephen Covey's 5th Habit from his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, "Seek first to understand, then to be understood." While you are listening to another person, if you are busy formulating your rebuttal to what they are saying, then are you really trying to understand them or are you trying to make your own case for being understood? Your interpersonal relationships will improve dramatically when you change that order and listen for understanding first, before trying to get others to listen to you. It will help them hear you better.

Book Review

Five Wishes: How Answering One Simple Question Can Make Your Dreams Come True
by Gay Hendricks

I particularly enjoyed reading this book in January, at the time when I was formulating my goals for 2008. It definitely informed my practice of goal setting for this year. I want to share it with you now, before you create yours for 2009

If you quickly become bored with casual conversation at networking events, family gatherings, or time with friends, this book can change all that. It will also help you become more intentional about creating the life you want.

Gay begins by asking one simple question: "Was your life a complete success"? Answer this question from the perspective of lying on your death bed. Most of us would answer no, so the follow up question would be, "What would have had to happen for your life to be a complete success"? Identify those answers, and then chart your course toward those goals. There is no time to start but this moment. It's really all you have.

Tip of the Month

One way to check yourself for bias is to notice whenever you are feeling self-righteous. Self-righteousness is a feeling experienced when you think you are unequivocally right and the other person is misguided, or worse, stupid or just dead wrong.

Whenever you have those types of feelings, it is a signal to yourself that you have closed yourself off and stopped listening. Recognize that sign and take a deep breath.

Assume an air of curiosity. Make it your goal to understand how the other person came to hold their point of view. Try to step into their shoes, imagine living their life, and see things through their eyes. If you can approach the situation with curiosity instead of righteousness, you will often see some validity to their position.

From that place you can take the best of both your thinking and the other person's and come up with a solution that can satisfy both of you. Try it and let me know how it works.

Business Q&A

Question: I work in a residential treatment facility for adolescent males and I have been trying to come up with some good interview questions  that would solicit answers that will produce insight into a  prospective new employee's level of acceptance/rejection of CT/RT.   Do you have any interview questions that might be appropriate?

Answer: It is great that you are beginning to think about a person's compatibility with CT/RT during the hiring process. Here are some questions that might be helpful:

    1. Under what circumstances do you think it would be all right to lie to a kid?

    2. If you are told our company only uses physical restraint when a child is a clear danger to
himself or others, give me some examples of situations where you think restraint would be
      necessary.

    3. If you are hired, do you think it is more important to make sure the boys follow rules
or to build quality relationship with them?

    4. What would you say to a staff person who ridiculed you for doing what your supervisor
tells you to do, especially if you know this staff is telling you to treat kids in a way
      you don't like?

    5. If you were in charge here, what rules do you think would be important to have here?
