A Message from Kim

Hello Everyone,

This month my focus is on Empowered Leadership and its application in the workplace. Of course there are other applications of leadership and Empowered Leadership can be applied in all of them. You can be an Empowered Leader of your family, your classroom, your congregation, your community organization, your Board of Directors, the PTA or PTO, or any entity where you are in a leadership position. Read this month's feature article and apply it to the area in your life where you take a leadership position. The information applies to you, even if you are not a manager in your workplace.

If you would like to learn more about Empowered Leadership than I could possibly put into this article, then you have other opportunities. I will be providing a free teleconference on June 24, 2008 from 8:45 to 9:45 PM ET. Then if you are local to the Chicago area, there is an all day workshop I offer at various times. Look for new workshops coming out in the fall semester.

I also want to call attention to the one-day Iintroduction to Choice Theory that is being offered on April 28th from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM CT at Prairie State College in Matteson, IL. This is the theory behind Empowered Leadership and my approach to diversity. Usually, I teach this in a one-week format but here is an unusual program offering for you to learn the basics in one day instead of having to schedule an entire week out of the office. Come check it out!

Make today the day you want it to be!
Unleash the power within you.

Ten Steps for Implementing Empowered Leadership
by Kim Olver

Empowered Leadership is based on the work of W. Edwards Deming and William Glasser. It is a way of managing people to ensure the best quality product or service while taking good care of the human capital providing that product or service. These are the ten steps to doing so:

1. Create a work environment that is physically, emotionally and spiritually safe for employees. Eliminate discrimination and oppression. Discourage gossip and foster an environment of safe risk-taking.

2. Help employees to feel connected to the mission and vision of the agency, to their teammates, to you as their supervisor and to administration. Communicate the vision and mission often and each employee’s role in it. Care about each individual employee and make sure they know you do. Foster cooperative teamwork. Help administration see the positives of your employees.

3. Ensure your employees feel cared about—that their lives matter, not just their work output. Notice when something is off and ask about it, leaving room for the employee to keep it to him or herself if he or she chooses to do so. Provide flexibility with work/life balance. Lack of appreciation is the main reason employees give for leaving their jobs. It’s not money.

4. Listen to employees’ ideas and implement those that are possible and make sense. Let your people know you value and respect their opinions and input. Decrease complaints by requiring each complaint be accompanied by at least three possible, reasonable solutions. Respect your employees as integral, contributing workers in your company. Communicate your employee’s importance, value and worth on a regular basis.

5. Allow your employees as much freedom as they can responsibly manage. You will give less to new employees and more to seasoned workers with a proven track record. Fight the urge to micromanage. Let your workers know what you want and allow to determine how they will provide it to you.

6. Provide your employees with choices. Allowing workers at least three options will increase cooperation. People do not like feeling there is no choice in a situation. It generally breeds anger and frustration.

7. Create opportunities for employees to have fun at work. Do not discourage play-making at work unless it becomes excessive. A little fun can make the day go faster, relieve stress and consequently, improve the output of each individual employee.

8. Ensure your employees have valuable and useful training so they can not only perform their jobs but also be promotion-ready. Not having useful training is one of the main reasons employees give for leaving their jobs.

9. Communicate the usefulness and purpose of what you are asking your employees to do. They must understand how their tasks will benefit themselves and the company. People who are asked to do things they don’t perceive as useful or things they don’t understand won’t do their best work.

10. Ask your employees to evaluate and constantly improve the quality of their work. Work together with your employees to develop production standards for quality. Ask your workers to evaluate their work against the standard and constantly look for ways to improve what they and the company does.

When you implement these Ten Steps in your workplace with the team you supervise, you will be amazed at the results. You will be providing the balance needed between the quality of the product or the service and the people who produce it. Striking this balance will allow you to get the most out of every employee you supervise.

Quote of the Week

"It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action and discipline that enabled us to follow through."

— Zig Ziglar

Zig Ziglar has the greatest way of saying simple things that are so profound. These three ingredients are the necessary ingredients in the recipe for success. It will be character that develops the dreams, goals and aspirations we pursue, commitment to those dreams that allows us to create the plans to set them in motion, and discipline is the thing that will keep us moving forward even when we are tired and want to quit. How's your character, commitment and discipline today?

Book Review

The One Minute Millionaire
by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen

I really loved this book for it's creativity. I had it on my shelf for a while but my limiting beliefs about wealth and money were sabotaging me from reading it. I've been working on those beliefs and consequently picked up the book and finished it in record time. The main creativity I'm referring to is the way the book is arranged. The authors wanted to appeal to both right- and left-brained people. They were successful by writing a story about the ideas they wanted to convey in the right-hand pages of the book. Then, they communicated in linear fashion the points of the book for logical, sequential left-brained people on the left-hand pages of the book. The reader gets to decide if he or she will read the story, the text or both.

I chose to read the story first. Then I went back and read the text, which was more understandable to me after reading the narrative. I really loved this approach. In addition, the content of this book is about how to create wealth in a relative short period of time by developing habits that can literally take a minute out of your day and consistently implementing them everyday. The topic of multiple streams of income is developed, as well as the importance of having a strong team with multiple contacts. The book really makes its point and if you are serious about creating wealth for yourself in an integritous manner, then you will want to read this book.

Tip of the Month

A tip I believe is very important is to create a mastermind group that works for you. I have been part of masterminds that have beautiful synergy and high productivity and I've been a part of others that weren't so productive. Some people have a bad taste in their mouths for masterminds that haven't worked out in the past. Please don't throw the baby out with the bath water! The concept of the mastermind was coined by Napoleon Hill in his book from the early 20th century, Think and Grow Rich. The concept is valid.

Whenever two or more people come together in the spirit of harmony to work toward a common goal, the strength they create from their joining is worth way more than either of them could produce independently. The trick to creating a working mastermind is to invite people with different knowledge bases. Don't create a mastermind of entreprenuers who are all in the business of accounting. They all know the same general things and will be hard pressed to add anything useful to the discussion that everyone doesn't already know. My perfect mastermind group is a relationship expert, a money expert, a marketing/pr expert, a computer expert, an attorney, and a coach.

You may have your own dream team based on what knowledge you are searching for. Create your team based on what you want, not on what seems popular or convenient. Meet on a regular basis, at least every other week. And come fully prepared to be present and contribute unselfishly everything you have. When you have a mastermind member who doesn't meet these criterion, replace him or her and keep on meeting. You will soon begin to see exponential growth in a short period of time.

Business Q&A

Question: How critical is it to tithe 10% of my income to charity?

Answer: I'm not sure exactly how to answer that question, as I think it has somewhat of a philosophical and spiritual answer. I tithe because I want to give back to those less fortunate than me. I was raised in the Christian faith so was exposed at an early age of the Bible's teaching to tithe. I personally believe it is the right thing to do.

Then there are those who do it because of the Law of Reciprocity. They think that if they give their 10% to charity, then they will receive even more in return. I believe there is truth to this but it shouldn't be your motivation for tithing.

You may say you are not making enough money to tithe. No one ever said tithing has to be in money. You can tithe your time. This can be even more effective--giving of your time and yourself, rather than just throwing money at an issue.

I recommend tithing, but in the end when all is said and done, tithing is between you and your Creator. Only you can determine what is right for you. Do it with wisdom.
